Prime Minister tells PD Congress peace
and unity is the way forward
The PD Party is one of the many promising political parties in Timor-Leste, the Prime Minister Dr José Ramos-Horta told the party’s Congress today.
“Many of its members and leaders are respected former activists in the resistance during the struggle for independence,” Dr Ramos-Horta said.
“And some of the leaders spent years in prison and have given much to our country.”
The Prime Minister said he was pleased to address the PD Party Congress to demonstrate that the Government will be impartial and scrupulously fair in its dealing with all Opposition political parties.
Dr Ramos-Horta also addressed the ASDT Party Congress last week and was received with rapturous applause by delegates. He said he was humbled by the welcome he received.
The Prime Minister has emphasised again two things with one common theme: “The Congress delegates should be messengers of peace and unity,” he told PD members today. “This is the way forward for our country.”
He appealed to party leaders and Congress delegates that upon their return to their communities they carry and spread the message of peace and unity.
“These senior community leaders can show the way for Timor-Leste to heal the wounds of past and current conflicts,” Dr Ramos-Horta said.
“In this way we will forge a more stable and prosperous country.”
The Prime Minister is on record as saying the Government will allocate funding on an equal basis for all the parties so that they can carry out their legitimate and peaceful political activities to inform the public about their party’s policies.
